Becoming A Successful Businesswoman starts with choosing the right business?

Successful businesswomen start with taking the right steps…long before the business plan.

Read on to understand what I mean…

There is no doubt that the business world is competitive, and that it is no longer a man’s club.

In the last few decades, there has been a huge increase in the number of women who are starting their own businesses. It is no surprise; we all know that more and more women want financial independence and have natural leadership skills which is what is needed to build successful businesses.

In addition to that, many women who experience success in their careers see entrepreneurship as the next best option to take charge of their lives. Gone are the days when a woman’s place was barefoot in the kitchen. These days, women are in stilettos or safety boots in boardrooms, underground or on construction sites making decisions and money with well-cooked meals in the fridge ready to feed their families.

Women are attracted to running their own businesses because the benefits thereof are endless and deeply satisfying.

  • For Example:
    • starting your own business gives you the freedom to make decisions about your own future,
    • drive your own career direction,
    • decide your working hours
    • circumvent the pay gap that sets women to earn less than their male counterparts
    • Business ownership is a primary method of creating wealth.

Sometimes, knowing the above may push us to take that step, the leap of Faith to start a business to reach our goals. But, it is important to research and understand what it takes to start and run a successful business. It is not only about the brilliant business idea but it starts with self-awareness of your own strengths and capabilities.

Knowing who you are and what you want to achieve will help you to identify the resources needed to attain your goals. If you’ve never thought of yourself as an entrepreneur before, knowing yourself better is a great place to start to gain some insight on what, where and how to start.

Here are a few tips on becoming a successful businesswoman:

Choose The Right Business for You:

You should choose the type of business that best fits your skills, abilities, passions, and goals.

For example you will fail dismally if you set out to be a successful interior designer when you can’t match your shoes to your outfit or dislike shopping.

Some of the Questions to answer before starting your business:

  • What do you believe are your talents?
  • When at work, current or previous…what part of work do you or did you enjoy the most?
  • What natural skills do you enjoy using most?
  • When you receive compliments about your work, what specifically are you complimented on?
  • What is your vision for your life? Does it match or accommodate the type of business you want to pursue?
  • Will this business help you reach your life goals?

Answers to the above questions should give you an idea of what business you will probably enjoy, what you will be able to do in the business, and what services you may need to outsource or bring in to make your business a success.

It is also important that you set your business goals, milestones, and growth plan from the very beginning.

I know a lot of people who are eager to succeed but remain stagnant because they are not sure what they want or what their life’s purpose is. They do not know their WHY.

If you don’t know your WHY? or where you are going, how will you choose the right business for you and your life goals?

A more important and harder question: how will you stay committed to your business when you do not know your WHY?

Any businessowner, leader or entrepreneur will tell you that the life of a businessowner or entrepreneur is hard, challenging and can push one to throw in the towel on any day… The one thing that keeps them going is their WHY? The passion they have towards achieving their goals and vision. This is also what we all need to turn our ideas into reality, sell our ideas and reach success.

Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve.

Achieving success is not an easy task, it requires hard work, dedication, perseverance, and determination. It is therefore important to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve in the next 3-5 years – this will also encourage you to manage time and resources responsibly.

  • The first step towards achieving success is the ability to visualize yourself being successful…
    • What does it look like?
    • What does it feel like?
    • What are the elements – tangible and intangible – that define success for you?

The above is what we should all work towards on a daily basis to ensure we are on the path to success!!

Now that we have touched on identifying and understanding your skills, passion, and type of business you want to start…we have to consider how you will get there…

SETTING GOALS:

Once you have defined what success looks like for your business, it is important to set goals that will help move your business in the right direction. Goals should be specific, measurable, and time-bound (SMART).

It is hard to achieve anything big, meaningful, and satisfying without planning and setting goals with milestones.
